Upcoming opportunities:

 
1.  FOR CURRENT JUNIORS:   Fort Detrick Student Intern Program offered by United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).  Separate internship from the NCI internships listed below (#2).  Begins with 8 week paid summer internship and then converts to an unpaid internship during the student's senior year.   They work in the laboratories their senior each each day and receive 4 credits toward their diploma.  Must be 17 years of age by June 15th, and be a US citizen.   Application is similar to the NCI internship application.      An informational meeting will be held Dec 7th during 2nd block.     See Ms. Mummert in A115 or Ms. Marcum in B128 for more information.

2.  FOR CURRENT JUNIORS:  The Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program (SIP) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at Frederick is designed to expose high school seniors to research and administrative management in a health care environment. The scientific interns experience the basic methods of cancer research through “hands-on” laboratory training.

 
Students Must:
·        Be in their junior year of high school when applying
·        Have successfully earned two credits in science and mathematics, all with grades B or higher;
·        Have an overall, unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher.   Students without a 3.0 GPA may still apply but have other requirements.
·        Be 16 years of age or older, and a US citizen or resident alien.
·        Be covered by health insurance
 
Students selected will:
Work full-time (40 hours per week) for eight consecutive weeks during the summer (training period) and receive a stipend of approximately $3,400.
Work three hours per day during the school year (of their senior year) as a student volunteer (no stipend) and receive credit towards their diploma.

3.  Science and Engineering Apprentice Program - 2010 Summer Internship (8 weeks - paid).
        Program places high school students in Department of Defense laboratories for 8 weeks in the summer.   
        Accepted students are assigned to a laboratory and work with a scientist or an engineer who serves 
        as their mentor.   More information and the online application can be found at

        Program dates run June 21 - Aug 13, 2010. Application due FEB 26, 2010. 2010.
